What does a Quality Assurance Manager do?

The Quality Assurance (QA) Manager plays a vital role in the activity of the quality assurance department. You work closely with other relevant departments in the company, such as R&D, and tasks are usually a mixture of hands-on QA work and line management. QA work is to maintain the current quality systems and reliability testing, so they meet quality standards. As well as this, processes and products are developed to improve product quality.

What tasks and responsibilities can you expect as a Quality Assurance Manager?

Your tasks and responsibilities will depend on the size of the organisation but are likely cover direct QA work and line management. It will typically involve the following:

• keeping sight of the company’s objectives to maximise profitability, and analysing data to identify potential areas of growth;
• reviewing policies and standards, checking that the company’s processes are compliant and current policies reflect all regulatory and internal standards;
• planning, conducting and monitoring product testing and inspections to ensure that auditing, testing and other QA work is correctly carried out and properly documented;
• developing improvements to the production processes by analysing data to pinpoint areas for improvement;
• handling customer complaints or feedback, developing suitable corrective measures and documenting/reporting progress;
• identifying any training requirements to meet the quality standards and providing such training to individuals.

What education and skills do you need as a Quality Assurance Manager?

Education requirements begin with a relevant bachelor’s degree and in many cases, a technical degree or post-graduate degree is necessary. Completion of further education courses such as Six Sigma, or in areas such as quality engineer, quality auditor and quality improvement will usually be expected.

Personal attributes:

Skills and experience should relate to tools, terminology and methodologies used in quality assurance. This may include quality inspection, auditing, and testing and implementing corrective or preventive measures. Of course, you will be highly competent in database management and computer skills generally.

Other skills and experience may include:

• excellent communication and interpersonal skills – a bold and confident leader but also a team player;
• able to visualise and prioritise different business scenarios, being adaptable and influential with strong negotiating skills;
• showing critical thinking and analytical/problem-solving ability, with great attention to detail;
• excellent time management and multitasking, especially project management when implementing new systems such as quality assurance protocols and processes;
• a good understanding of the company’s processes and how the products impact customers.

What salary can you expect as a Quality Assurance Manager?

Depending on your qualifications and experience, and the size of the organisation, the salary of a Quality Assurance Manager in the Netherlands usually ranges from €46.000,- to €91.000,- per annum, depending on experience and the seniority of the position.
