What does a QC Technician do?

In your role as QC Technician – Protein Analytics (PA) you are part of a team using various analytical methods. The team is assessing the quantity, potency and purity of intermediates, drug substances and products. For vaccines, you help to develop methods for characterisation and identity characteristics. You will be familiar with GMP manufacturing of biologic drugs and commercial manufacturing of other live microbial products, plus a range of therapeutic proteins and vaccines. This will involve all aspects of process and analytical development, including cell banking. You are also key in maintaining laboratory controls and appropriate methodology.

What roles and responsibilities can you expect as a QC Technician?

Your roles and responsibilities will depend on the size of the organisation and the laboratory facility, as well as the areas in which the lab operates. In all cases, you work closely with the lab scientists and your work will typically involve some or all of the following:

Testing:

• intermediates, drug substance and drug product (HPLC, spectrophotometry, SDS-PAGE, ELISA);
• utility samples (e.g. TOC, nitrates, conductivity);
• raw materials (e.g. FTIR, GC).

Studies:

• validation studies for product-specific methods;
• stability studies (testing);
• sample analysis for product characterisation, formulation and process development;
• method maintenance – critical method parameters, test procedures and training;
• data processing, statistical analysis and reporting to internal stakeholders;
• general laboratory tasks, from equipment maintenance and calibration to reviews of test data and quality documentation;
• striving for continuous improvement of the lab environment and services.

What education and skills do you need as a QC Technician?

Educational requirements start with a bachelor degree (MLO or HLO ) or a master’s in analytical chemistry or a similar field. You will need working experience too, preferably in a relevant environment such as GMP or pharmaceuticals. This should be in an ML-II+ laboratory or higher, or in industry. Practical skills and knowledge of specific techniques in biomolecule analysis are preferred. These may include AUC, CE, DLS, FFF-MALS and LC.

Personal attributes include:

• an all-round technician, fluent in Dutch and English, spoken and written;
• strong analytical skills with a critical attitude, patience and excellent attention to detail producing accurate work;
• excellent communication with senior staff and colleagues working as part of a team;
• a responsible mindset for planning work, and organising this between primary and secondary tasks;
• good time management, a flexible attitude and able to work shifts.

What salary can you expect as a QC Technician?

The salary depends on your qualifications and experience, and the size of the organisation. However, the salary of a Lab Technician (PA) in the Netherlands usually ranges from €25.900,- to €45.400 per annum.
