What does a Lab Supervisor do?

Your position as a Lab Supervisor/Manager in a quality control analytical lab means you are responsible for all analytical testing, with the support of a team of analysts and investigators. Depending on the company and their products, you might be testing products for stability pre-release such as existing or new drugs, non-active ingredients or even packaging. Stability studies and in-depth root cause investigations may also be part of your brief. Other responsibilities may include pharmaceutical and dossier compliance, and validation and verification of analytical methods.

What tasks and responsibilities can you expect as a Lab Supervisor/Manager Stability and Investigations?

Your tasks and responsibilities will vary between organisations but overall you are responsible for planning the work in collaboration with various stakeholders, and guiding your team. The responsibilities fall roughly into three categories: managing stability and investigation work; managing your team and other resources; and managing an appropriate culture of safety.

Managing stability and investigation work:

• guiding the team in stability and investigation strategies, pharmaceutical and dossier compliance tasks, and in-depth root cause analyses;
• ensuring quality aligned with the strategy, commitments and goals of the QC organisation and SOPs, regulatory guidelines and cGXP compliance requirements;
• acting as a subject matter expert for audits (internal and regulatory) and maintaining continuous improvement in quality.

Managing your team and other resources:

• managing team performance including employee development and mentoring in line with company policy and values;
• succession planning and talent identification;
• managing the agreed budget for the team, and other resources.

Managing an appropriate culture of safety:

• maintaining a culture of safety to appropriate standards within the workplace;
• review and suggesting improvements to meet business needs having regard for health and safety.

What education and skills do you need as a Lab Supervisor/Manager Stability and Investigations?

The educations and skills required will depend largely on the seniority and content of the position on offer. However, examples of what might be required for education and experience are:

• a bachelor or master’s degree in a relevant area, or equivalent experience;
• experience in pharmaceuticals with method validation, equivalence or method verification studies, and a good knowledge of ICH guidelines, pharmaceutical quality systems and production processes;
• management experience (2−3 years).

Personal attributes include:

• excellent organisational skills and a strong (scientific) analytical oriented mindset;
• excellent written and verbal communication skills;
• results-oriented and a proactive team leader;
• able to act as a subject matter expert with respect to stability, compliance and investigations.

What salary can you expect as a Lab Supervisor?

The salary for a Lab Supervisor/Manager will depend on various factors − your qualifications and experience, and the seniority of the role. As a guide, in the Netherlands you can expect a salary of between €45.000,- and €91.000,- per annum.
