What does a Lab Manager QC do?

Your role as a Lab Manager in a QC lab means you verify that all the processes the company undertakes meet the agreed quality standards. Working with internal stakeholders such as the production team, planners and QA experts, you coordinate the work and communication between all parties. Leading the QC team, you not only optimise the QC processes but constantly strive for improvement and at the same time, plan the personal development of your team members.

What tasks and responsibilities can you expect as a Lab Manager QC?

Your tasks and responsibilities will vary according to the particular company you will be working for, but are likely to include the following under three main headings:

Production:

• analysing raw materials, in-process samples and finished products and declaring acceptance of incoming materials and finished goods;
• collaborating with internal stakeholders to ensure that products reach customers on time and are of appropriate quality;
• ensuring correct maintenance of equipment and advising when purchase of new equipment is proposed.

Regulations and development:

• implementing GMP, ISO and other relevant regulations that relate to housekeeping, quality and safety issues in the lab;
• keeping abreast of professional developments and improving the quality management system by suggesting and implementing long-term proposals;
• representing the department by overseeing internal and external audits and ensuring they are reliable, efficient and conducted to a timetable.

People management:

• managing team performance including employee talent development and optimalisation of potential;
• motivating employees and encouraging collaboration;
• providing a safe environment.

What education and skills do you need as a Lab Manager QC?

The educations and skills required will depend largely on the seniority and content of the position on offer. Examples of what might be required for education and experience are:

• a qualification (HLO/WO) in chemistry and post-HBO courses in quality management and auditing;
• previous experience as a manager (3 years plus) in manufacturing or quality control, or in a laboratory;
• in-depth knowledge of quality control procedures and regulatory standards (e.g. ISO, GMP, GLP) plus experience in maintaining and improving quality systems.

Personal attributes include:

• able to work with a project-based and pragmatic mindset, with strong analytical and problem-solving skills;
• excellent written and verbal communication, and listening skills;
• strong attention to detail, observation and a high level of accuracy;
• excellent organisational and leadership skills.

What salary can you expect as a Lab Manager QC?

The salary for a Lab Manager QC will depend on various factors − your qualifications and experience, and the seniority of the role. As a guide, in the Netherlands you can expect a salary of between €45.000,- and €91.000,- per year. In addition, there may be other benefits such as extra leave days, a pension plan and a contract leading to permanent employment.
